Saffron Varieties

There are in general 2 main types of saffron spices. One is the saffron that is used to add colour and the other type of saffron is used to give both the colour and the unique flavour of saffron. Saffron is native to Asia but is now grown around the world. Spanish saffron and Iranian saffron make up 80% of the world saffron production.


When using saffron in cooking it is of course desired to obtain the saffron with both the flavour and colour attributes.

Saffron is grown around the World in a variety of countries. By far the largest producer of saffron spices is Iran and Iranian saffron is highly regarded especially for its strength of colour.

There is also American Saffron is grown in Pennysilvania.
